Right-First-Time Medical Implants

University of Jordan × University of Sheffield × PRINTie 3D

A landmark collaboration produced patient-specific 3D-printed implants for complex craniofacial reconstructive surgeries.

The project focused on developing patient-specific implants for cases of hemifacial microsomia (a congenital condition affecting facial bone development) and skull lacerations caused by trauma.

Using advanced CT scanning, computational design, and precision 3D printing, the team created implants that fit perfectly on the first attempt — eliminating the costly trial-and-error process typical of imported solutions.

The results were remarkable: over 90% cost savings compared to European suppliers, with superior surgical outcomes. Implants designed and manufactured locally in Jordan performed as well or better than imported alternatives at a fraction of the cost.
